Love Vintage?

 

Over the weekend I visited The Vintage Fair (Custard Factory, Birmingham)

 

On offer was a range of stalls, handmade jewellery, a vintage hair salon and tea and cake.

What more can a girl want? Tea, shopping and cake!

 

With A/W around the corner it’s more than likely time to update your winter wardrobe. Vintage fairs are the perfect way for any trendsetter or fashion follower to get hold of unique and current items for a fraction of the recommended retail price.

 We all know the first rule of fashion is that it repeats itself.

The multiple number of times I’ve heard my mum tell me..“I used to have a pair of those when I was younger…”

 

 

 So why not visit your local fair?

Current trends are more than likely inspired by styles adopted from previous generations.

It’s a fun diversion from your usual high street shopping schedule.

Retro inspired designs continuously re emerge on the catwalks so vintage clothes are great investments.

He continued: “This is my first collection. Please be easy. Please give me a chance to grow. This is not some celebrity sh*t. I don’t f*ck with celebrities. I f*ck with the creatives in this room, the amazing people who spend every day of their life trying to make the world a more beautiful place. The amount of people that tried to get me a celebrity f*cking deal. They said, ‘You need to do boot-cut jeans, or you won’t sell.’ Shut the f*ck up ! Or Hedi Slimane in the motherf*cking Mercer, sitting with me, saying, ‘Stop giving them your ideas, Kanye. Do your own thing.’ Hedi Slimane! To feel so frustrated. And I thank anybody who came to this party, everybody who supported, everybody who believed, because people thought it was a joke, and maybe people still do, but I can only grow from this point.”

The reviews came in later, and there were some criticisms. Suzy Menkes noted: “Mr. West followed the sexual energy of the Balmain style, with well-made clothes in fine fabrics. But a celebrity tag and a lively audience filled with music-business friends, does not cut it in Paris.”WWD wrote: “A white dress with a strip of a racer back and a pair of colorful leather pants were nice. But in general the leathers and cuts were too clunky. The rest of the collection cribbed from the work of the designers he admires, many of whom were sitting in the audience, and whose ranks he intends to join.” The New York Times‘s Eric Wilson blogged: “There was one good-looking pair of color-blocked pants in blue and coral, but it was obvious that most of the clothes suffered from a poor fit.” And from The Wall Street Journal: ”A vast quantity of luxury materials can’t blind people to a lack of creative marksmanship.”

Cathy Horyn writes that the day after the show, West acknowledged criticism like the poor fit and the casting, and: “He was completely open about the learning-curve problems and indicated that he planned to deal with them.”

All Walks Beyond The Catwalk

“All Walks Beyond the Catwalk is an organisation that recognises the power the fashion industry has to communicate positive messages to women and men about their bodies and acts. Small steps, big ideas.”

And we at Bonafide had orders from one of the co-founders themselves- fashion writer and broadcaster, Caryn Franklin to share this with you guys. Curated alongside friends, model Erin O’Connor and PR guru, Debra Bourne, the trio visualised and actioned a project that sought to work with ‘influential Catwalk designers and top industry creatives to celebrate more diversity within the fashion industry’.

With the initial help of London Development Agency funding and the British Fashion Council, the innovative campaign sought to capture the cutting-edge designs of eight emerging designers on ‘eight professional models aged between 18-65 and sizes 8-16, as a celebration of individuality and diversity’. The images were then featured in the Pre-fall issue of I-D magazine and provided the backdrop of their launch campaign on the opening night of 2009 London Fashion Week.

The All Walks campaign has seized the attention of many including: government, designers, major national publications, high-street store Marks & Spencer and the public who are keen to see a dramatic shift in the rigid attitudes towards appearance in the industry. Endorsed by some of the most reputable names in fashion such as; Kayt Jones, Rankin, Matthew Williamson and Twiggy, the campaign has truly gone from strength to strength.

Luckily myself, Bonafide Editor, Sam and contributor, Tamara were able to hear about the campaign from Caryn herself at How to Look Good during Style Birmingham Live, where she and her beautiful models showcased key trends from this season on different shapes and sizes. Although slightly younger than the intended audience, we all left inspired by the beauty of the various models, provoking this tweet from me:

“The older models just stole the show-there’s a certain beauty and grace that only comes with age. When you have it you’ll definitely feel it”.

 So get behind it and show your support! Let’s promote change.
